Castle Pines, Colorado lies between the cities of Lone Tree to its north and Castle Rock to the south in Douglas County. The town is divided into two areas, The Village of Castle Pines and The City of Castle Pines North.
A Legacy with Deep Roots
Before Castle Pines resembled a town, it was home to farmland and ranches. The residents of Castle Pines are fortunate to have access to thousands of acres of open space that is steeped in Colorado history. Seekers can find landmarks for ranching, pioneers, and Native American traditions right in their own backyard within the parks that border the town, Highlands Ranch Open Space and Daniels Park. This area was once a thoroughfare for stagecoach travelers making their way to and from Denver and Colorado Springs. Outlaws would lie in wait for the unsuspecting travelers.
The Village of Castle Pines came first and was established in 1981 by Jack A. Vickers. The 3,000-acre master planned community was to be a compliment to the golf club and course that opened earlier that same year. The idea was for the people of Castle Pines to be able to enjoy the amenities of the area outside of their tee-time
Castle Pines into the Modern Era
The land that the Castle Pines Golf Club sits on was purchased in the 1970’s and the course was completed over the next decade. The golf course itself was designed by the world-famous golf legend, Jack Nicklaus. The club was host to The International professional golf tournament, an annual PGA Tour event from 1986 through 2006. This area is considered an unincorporated community within the City of Castle Pines.
The City of Castle Pines North, with an elevation of 6,000 to 6,500, boasts views of Pikes Peak, Mount Evans and the Rocky Mountains. The town was officially incorporated with the first election of municipal officers on February 12, 2008 after having been approved by the popular vote on November 6, 2007. At the time of incorporation, Castle Pines was Douglas County’s first new city since 1995, Colorado’s first new city since 2004, and Colorado’s 271st municipality.
Castle Pines is one of the most affluent cities in the United States. As of the 2010 census, the median income for a household in the city was $137,019, and the median income for a family was $147,473. Being such an affluent area lends to better upkeep of town facilities and green spaces. The town prides itself in “conscientious development that balances open space, residential and commercial uses.”
